If you can’t go to Italy, then this is where you come to in Sydney for super Italian food. Visitors to Sydney often make a beeline for our Italian quarter in the inner west suburb of Leichhardt. A chic crowd descended this week to celebrate Tuscany Ristorante’s return with a cutting-edge menu and award-winning team. And Taste for Travel was there, naturally.

Other celebrity guests (ahem) included the Wests Tigers’ Benji Marshall and his TV presenter girlfriend Zoe Balbi, weight loss guru Michelle Bridges and her husband Bill, and fashion designers Gary Bigeni, Rebecca Vallance-Gasan and Jaime Wright.

The recently relaunched Tuscany Ristorante emerges under the management and part-ownership of industry veteran, Darran Smith. Darran earned his stripes at many of Sydney’s most notable hot spots including Hemmesphere, sushi e, Icebergs Dining Room and Bar, Flinders Inn, and Glass Brasserie.

With his latest venture, Tuscany, Darran has gathered together an impressive line-up of some of Sydney’s leading culinary talents to create an exciting and enticing new dining destination.

Tuscany Ristorante is at 55 Norton Street. The new menu is a welcome addition to Leichhardt and the inner west’s food scene. The all-star kitchen team includes Lachlan Robinson – who joins Tuscany direct from the celebrated Pendolino in Sydney’s CBD via Icebergs Dining Room & Bar and North Bondi Italian – and Simon Latham who has recently returned to Australia after moving to Switzerland to take up an exclusive catering position for the Australian embassy following the closure of the critically acclaimed Flinders Inn.

Guests enjoyed Mumm Champagne, Fox’s Italian wines and canapés showcasing innovative highlights of the new menu including pan fried scallops, cauliflower puree, fennel and orange salad, crisp pancetta on spoons, and the exquisitely creamy mini white chocolate and strawberry cheesecakes.

Tuscany Ristorante prices are very reasonably set at $A18.50 entrees, $A15.50 and $A22.50 pasta dishes, $A28.50 main courses, and $A12.50 desserts. Children’s meals are also available.

On the menu at the re-launch party: Buffalo mozzarella, tea smoked heirloom tomatoes, eschallots, baby basil and seeded mustard vinaigrette. Beef carpaccio with truffled pecorino, toasted pine nuts, cornichons and baby cress on crostini; Pan fried scallops, cauliflower puree, fennel and orange salad, crisp pancetta on spoons; Grilled beef sirloin, cannellini bean puree, roasted eschallots and salmoriglio; Roasted pumpkin risotto with baby spinach and honey roasted macadamias; Agrodolce duck risotto with roasted beetroot and chives; Gnocchi with braised short beef rib; Mini white chocolate and strawberry cheesecakes; Gorgonzola Dolce, Asiago and Pecorino Romano cheese plates; Arancini balls with aioli.

Drinks: Cocktail: Tuscany Martini with Elyx Absolut Vodka; Beer: Tappeto Volante, Italy; White Wine: Marco Felluga Pinot Gris DOC, Friuli, Italy; Champagne: Mumm Cordon Rouge, Reims, France; Red Wine: Torbrek Woodcutters Shiraz.
