WELL known yoga instructor and health coach Ron Veldhuis has a new venture at The Palms Retreat in the northeast corner of the Thai island of Ko Samui. He’s now the general manager of the resort, and has created a range of wellness packages for guests.
Ron is a certified wellness consultant, athletic and health coach, and devoted yoga instructor. He’s been based in Samui for many years and has a deep understanding of Thai culture through his collaboration with indigenous artisans and communities. He conducts tours to coconut farms, foundation schools, animal sanctuaries, an artisanal silversmith, and cooking classes at Lat and Cameron’s organic farm. Their Island Organics Thai Cooking Class gets a universal thumbs up on Trip Advisor. Other excursions with Ron include exploring Samui’s waterfalls and the natural beauty of the island.
“Our detox and rejuvenation programs encourage guests to achieve their personal goals and heighten their ability to perform better, improve concentration and avoid potentially chronic diseases by learning how to respect food and its effects on the body,” says Ron.
Ko Samui, one of Thailand’s largest islands in the Gulf of Thailand, is known for its palm-fringed beaches circling coconut groves and dense, mountainous rainforest. It’s also home to luxury resorts, posh spas and a rowdy nightlife scene that often attracts a backpacker crowd.
But The Palms Retreat is a fair distance from all that noise.
The Palms Retreat is located within a private estate in the northeast corner of Samui, close to Cheong Mon Beach. Each compound has three air-conditioned villas, a spacious communal lounge and dining area and a lap pool. The grounds are teeming with exotic flowers, fruits and trees.
There’s also a tennis court on site and free wi-fi. Guests can add personal training in an air-conditioned gym, kayaking, scuba diving/snorkelling, beauty therapies, personal meditation and yoga sessions, and many other activities.
All inclusive daily rates include accommodation in spacious en-suite rooms (some with in- and outdoor showers) a choice of detox programs, yoga and meditation sessions, a daily 60-minute daily massage, daily guided morning walk, introduction to SuperCharge Yourself ™ (a peak performance program), fresh cold pressed juices, complimentary herbal teas. For those on the Easy Detox regime, there’s healthy cuisine created from organic ingredients sourced from local farms and markets.
The Palms Retreat founder, Susan Field, says she wanted to move away from the “one size fits all” detox programmes available in many resorts in Samui and instead work with the most highly-qualified professionals to create a retreat that is personalised.
Rates start from USD229 (Thai Baht 7,350) per person, per night, depending on room category, season and selected program. For two people sharing a room, the second person gets a 35% discount.
Resort manager Minah Pohchi grew up in Southern Thailand where her grandparents were naturopaths. As a result, Minah has spent many years coaching on the benefits of using indigenous plants and remedies for ailments. She shares her knowledge and passion in her weekly “Magic Garden” tour, pointing out edible fruits, plants, herbs and their uses that grow in abundance at the resort.
